In the late 1800s Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, NY was created as a speculative luxury housing development by Walter L. Johnson, founder and one of the neighborhood developers. Mr. Johnson named his new community Dyker Heights, since his family’s land overlooked Dyker Meadow, better known today as The Dyker Beach Park and Golf Course. He started by dividing out sections of his own land, building houses, and then developing an attractive suburban community.
Dyker Heights is an affluent residential neighborhood in the southwest corner of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. It sits on a hill between Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Borough Park, and Gravesend Bay. The neighborhood is officially bounded by 7th and 14th Avenues, 65th Street, and the Belt Parkway.
Today, this neighborhood is famous for its Christmas holiday decorations and is regularly referred as; Dyker Heights Christmas Lights.
History of the Christmas Lights Tradition
There are a few versions of how the tradition started, and local historians say it dates all the way back to the 1940s. One of the well-known pioneers is Lucy Spata, with her famed house on 84th Street where every inch of the property is decorated. The Spata’s have been decorating for over 40 years and add something different yearly. In addition to keeping the family tradition going strong and putting smiles on thousands of kids faces from around the world, the Spata’s use this fame to give back to the community through charities.
This is just one of the most celebrated homes; hundreds of homes in the area have breathtaking decorations and inspiring stories. Their inspiration, passion, and dedication may have paved the way for this world-famous annual holiday tradition.
